The founder of Hillsong, the international megachurch that became a magnet for millennial and superstar Christians, said he had had concerns for years about Carl Lentz, the pastor who was fired last year in part because of "moral failures. He's a unique character. Lentz was the lead pastor of Hillsong's New York branch.
He became a pastor with the church, based in Sydney, after he launched its first U. About a decade into Lentz's tenure with the church, Houston announced in a statement that he had been fired "following ongoing discussions in relation to leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures.

Why would I look to a church for ministry philosophy that believes the opposite of what I believe in such a significant area? As an Assemblies of God church, Hillsong does not believe in the eternal security of the believer—which relates to the doctrine of salvation itself. It appears to me that the doctrine that was so important to the Reformers, and for which my Baptist forefathers died, is often downplayed by churches like Hillsong and others which are involved in the CCM movement. But in doing so, it risks turning away congregants: the average Hillsong megachurch goer is likely to be an upwardly mobile woman, millennial or younger, with an interest in social justice and feeling good about her faith. Regardless of the outcome of the Lentz investigation and the Houston trial, it remains to be seen whether believers can tolerate accusations of such mortal failings in leaders they feel are divinely blessed.
